Albuquerque Public Schools

Overcoming outdated technology, a lack of meaningful content, and noncompliance with a State Act.

Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is the 30th largest school district in the nation and the largest in New Mexico, serving more than 88,000 students. It has 142 schools scattered across nearly 1,200 square miles. APS is the second largest employer in Albuquerque, providing jobs for 14,000 people including 6,300 teachers.

The Albuquerque Public School System was more than ready to overhaul their website. Due in part to a 10-year contract with a  proprietary vendor, the APS site faced a number of serious issues:

  1. Outdated technology
  2. Poor usability (including no search!)
  3. Lack of meaningful content for parents and teachers
  4. Noncompliance with New Mexico’s Open Meeting Act[1]:
    • unresponsive to requests for information like Board meeting minutes
    • failed to routinely update personnel directories, policies, and procedures
    • haphazardly handled requests for public records

In their site redesign, APS wanted to resolve these issues by:

  1. Becoming a single source for district news, events, and announcements
  2. Adding a comprehensive search
  3. Standardizing and linking to school sites in the district
  4. Facilitating communication across the district between teachers, parents, and students
  5. Having the capacity for future integration with:
    • independent departments
    • schools
    • intranets
    • online learning sites

Use Plone’s out-of-the-box capabilities

Unlike other Content Management Systems (CMS), content workflow, search, user management, and robust scalability are at the core of Plone’s foundation.

By leveraging these built-in functionalities, the new APS site did become the single source for district news, events, and emergency announcements. And, all serious issues were resolved with:

  • Vastly improved usability
  • Site search
  • Content workflow, including some automated content sharing
  • User management with varying permissions for site support personnel, school administrators, teachers, parents, and students
  • Interactive classroom pages
  • Multilingual translations
  • Secure online form submission

Today the site is ready to assume the extended functionality that the Albuquerque Public School System will want in the future. Integrating with other enterprise services, keeping information secure, and scaling to meet future needs are all in a day’s work for Plone.
